Anointing of the Sick
The church believes the among the seven sacraments there is one especially intended to strengthen those who are sick.
From ancient times in the church, it has been the practice to anoint the sick with blessed oil. Over the centuries, the anointing of the sick was conferred more and more exclusively on those at the point of death. Because of this, it received the name “extreme unction” or the “last rites”.
Following the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), it was determined that, in the Roman rite, this sacrament would no longer be referred to as the “last rites”. Rather, it would be called the sacrament of the anointing of the sick.
This is a sacrament not only just for those who are at the point of death. Rather, as soon as the person begins to be in danger from sickness or old age, it is fitting that he/she receive this sacrament. In the case of another grave illness, he/she may receive this sacrament again.
It is fitting to receive the anointing of the sick just prior to a serious operation or serious test. It is a healing prayer for the body, mind, and soul.
This sacrament is intended to offer the person special graces to endure the sufferings of illness or old age as well as the forgiveness of sins if the sick person is in need of sacramental reconciliation.
Ideally, families should request the Anointing while the sick person is alert and able to appreciate the graces of the sacrament. Therefore, please schedule the visit in a timely manner, not leaving it until the last moment. Arrangements for Anointing of the Sick may be made by calling the parish at 702-733-8323 or emailing Kamila Donati.
